Project Overview

FoodSwitch is a consumer health technology platform developed by The George Institute for Global Health, launched in Australia in 2012 and now spanning 17 jurisdictions including the US, UK, China, India, Fiji, South Africa, and the Gulf. The core app lets users scan a product barcode to instantly receive a Health Star Rating (0.5–5 stars) along with a ranked list of healthier alternatives within the same food category.

The platform has evolved into a suite of three apps: FoodSwitch (general health), EcoSwitch (planetary health and greenhouse gas ratings), and GlutenSwitch (gluten-free alternatives for coeliac users). A crowd-sourced data contribution system lets users submit unlisted products, continuously expanding the database. Major partners include WHO, ALDI, Coles, Woolworths, and Nielsen IQ.
